Somkhanda steps up to help save the world’s tallest mammal

5 Giraffe in container being translocated to SomkhandaKirsten Oliver CustomWILDLANDS, a programme of the WILDTRUST and the Emvokweni Community Trust (ECT) working collaboratively with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) and Tracy and Du Plessis Game Capture (TDC) recently welcomed 10 giraffes from the Munyawane and Phinda Private Game Reserves to Somkhanda Community Game Reserve.

During a recent translocation, eight female giraffe (and two males) have been added to the male dominated giraffe population at Somkhanda Community Game Reserve to bolster the population and add new genes.

Somkhanda’s Reserve Manager, Meiring Prinsloo said, “The current sex ratio of the Somkhanda giraffe population is skewed towards males. This generous donation of additional females will help rectify the sex ratio in our population and enhance our active contribution towards giraffe conservation.”

Latest estimates show that there are only about 111,000 giraffe remaining in all of Africa. Their numbers have dropped by almost 30% over the last three decades in what GCF calls a ‘silent extinction’. The greatest threats to giraffe in the wild are habitat loss and fragmentation caused by a growing human population as well as diseases and illegal hunting/poaching in some parts of Africa. Giraffe are listed as ‘Vulnerable’ on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

To put these numbers into perspective, there is one giraffe for every four African Elephant in the wild. Africa’s elephant population is estimated at approx. 415,000 animals. These figures speak volumes for the amount of work that is still required to save these animals from extinction. We believe in working collaboratively with individuals and organisations who value both people and planet and share our vision of making meaningful change to our environment.

“This operation forms part of our wider mission to restore biodiversity and re-wild areas that have been transformed. We have been particularly successful in linking community reserves and international donors to move large numbers of game into areas where they can thrive. These re-wilding efforts don’t only improve biodiversity, but also support rural development through tourism as the new wild-areas become safari destinations,” Said Dr Roelie Kloppers, CEO of the WILDTRUST.

The Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF) is the only NGO in the world that concentrates solely on the conservation and management of giraffe in the wild. GCF works on, manages and supports giraffe conservation initiatives that concern all four species of giraffe in 16 African countries. In the last few years, GCF has supported giraffe translocations in six countries and successfully translocated over 100 giraffe which has effectively increased giraffe habitat in Africa by over 21,000 km².

Director of the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, Stephanie Fennessy, added that “While giraffe are in real trouble in most parts of Africa, their numbers are increasing in Southern Africa. We now estimate that over half of Africa’s giraffe population lives in Southern Africa. This is due to good game management and successful conservation efforts and initiatives like this one.”

Giraffe may not be part of the Big 5, but they are one of the most iconic African animals and urgently need our help now. Translocations are an effective conservation strategy to establish new populations or strengthen existing ones and are an important conservation tool to safeguard the future of giraffe.

American Ballet Performance Awards for Laddsworth ballet dancers

Laddsworth logoLaddsworth Ballet dancers, Camilla Conway and Amy Goddard, took part in the American Academy of Ballet Performance Awards on Saturday, 14 November 2020.

Camilla Conway (Grade 4) was awarded a Silver with Distinction for Level 4 American Academy of Ballet.

Amy Goddard (Grade 7) was awarded Gold with Distinction for Level 7 American Academy of Ballet. She also received a Mignon Furman Award, which is a Scholarship to attend the AAB Summer School 2021 in New York or Winter Online School 2020/2021.

The fiery-haired, guitar-slinging singer/songwriter- Rusty Red from Durban - joins us on the MiTH stage. The son of a preacher man, a preacher woman and the brother of yet another preacher man, Rusty Red skipped the religious gene and instead found himself searching for meaning through the vibrations of six rusty strings.
His musical influences range from John Mayer's sweet and subtle marriage of blues guitar and introspective lyricism, Slow Hand Eric Clapton and BB King's musical restraint, Stevie Ray Vaughan's lack of restraint, all the way to the occasional wit one might only find in a Queen song.

Well known in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands for his appearances with Pietermaritzburg legends, The Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, who were among his musical mentors, as well as Durban-based powerhouse band The Black Lapels, Rusty has slowly but surely been making a name for himself as a solo artist - the kind THAT IS very difficult to ignore.

8pm: The Name On The Drum
“The Name On The Drum” is an alternative rock, folk and indie band that focuses on playing original music but they also insert a variety of covers into their live shows. Ranging their sound from full electric to simple acoustics, "The Name On The Drum" uses all the tools at their disposal to create a unique blend of honest, thought-provoking song-writing with absorbing musical performances.

With influences that include, Rise Against, Bob Dylan, Frightened Rabbit, The National, Angus & Julia Stone and Gregory Alan Isakov, their song writing also creates awareness of current world issues.

When the band was formed in 2011 the plan was to have a different 'name on the drum' at each performance, now they simply go by "The Name On The Drum" or "TNOTD". Current performing members are brothers Ben and Nat Bruzas. Who, in July 2019 released their independently recorded and produced second EP "Souvenirs". Based in Hillcrest, they have played extensively around KZN, as well as touring Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. "TNOTD" has also performed at various Music Festivals, Splashy Fen (2017), Lube & Tube (2019), Pecanwood Oktoberfest (2016), Ales For Tails(2016,2017,2018), Frothing Beats (2018) Imbumba Fiesta (2018), Roseway Waldorf’s Musical Moonlight Market and Organic Market, Monteseel Music Fest (2015,2016,2017) and Outland Festival (2016).
 
7pm: Ilan & Chesco
Chesco is predominantly a theatre writer and performer. However, like many, he could not resist the allure of guitars and has been tinkering away ever since he heard ‘Streets of London’ plucked by his mum. A skilled performer, Chesco won a coveted silver Ovation award at the National Arts Festival in 2018 and has performed live musical scoring for stage productions.

Ilan Lax has been a singer, songwriter and part of the Maritzburg music community for more years than he can remember or imagine. “Music was around me in my mother’s womb and remains a foundational element that contributes to who I am and stirs my life-force.” Ilan writes and sings songs that try to reflect on his life experience, from love and family, to work, the world around and the things that move him – and which reflect the title of one instalment Douglas Adams’ Guide series: “Life, the Universe and Everything”.

Ilan and Chesco have reaped the serendipity of the Covid 19 lockdown to play together and co-write a few tunes. Enjoy the collaboration.

Laddsworth Grade Threes hold Victorian Day

Kelsey NeroLaddsworth Primary School Grade Three pupils held Victorian Day on Thursday 22 October 2020. Pupils transformed themselves into stylish Ladies and Gentleman. They enjoyed many Victorian activities including ink and quill writing, games and a picnic on the lawn.

South African musician Matthew Mole uses his voice for the Oceans

Image 5 Matthew Mole Ocean Campaign Taryn HatchettSAMA Award-winning musician Matthew Mole recently added his voice to the chorus calling for increased ocean protection within Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in South Africa, in partnership with local environmental NPO, WILDTRUST. South Africa currently only protects 5% of its oceans and the need to increase this is urgent.
 
Mole and his beautiful wife, Jess, are featured in a powerful video doing its rounds on social media (WATCH: https://fb.watch/1YzeMeJ84B/), which forms part of a series that while stating, WE DON’T NEED OUR OCEANS, looks to highlight all the reasons why we do.

In reality, if our oceans were to die, we would no longer be around, but the WE DON’T NEED OUR OCEANS campaign hopes to help us see and understand all that the ocean gives us. One way of doing this is by showing South Africans what a world without our oceans looks like.

In the video Mole, in a world with no oceans, is seen wearing an oxygen mask reflecting back on all the times him and Jess could surf, take walks on the beach, relax and unwind in a lush, green park.

Every second breath we take comes from the ocean. A world without our oceans means a world with less than half the current oxygen levels.

South Africa is known as an adventure destination, and the coast provides countless activities – snorkelling, scuba diving, fishing, shark diving, whale watching, coastal hiking, bird-watching and good surfing. The ocean also adds a psychological benefit to people who engage with it, whale watching for example has been found to increase a person’s overall enrichment from the ocean.

When asked why he chose to get involved in spreading the message for increased ocean protection Mole said: “Jess and I have always had a love and appreciation for the ocean and everything in it. I think everyone wants to help save our planet but are not always sure how. This way Jess and I can do our bit and hopefully inspire a wave of positive change, no matter how small.”

“We really need to start acting like we need our oceans. There is an amazing take action page on oceanimpact.co.za, with lists of things every single South African can do to benefit our oceans. Some simple things for you to do include using a reusable coffee cup when buying your takeaway coffee, saying no to straws and other single-use plastics, and going for a walk around your block and picking up litter. Obviously, the best thing we can do is increase our Marine Protected Areas, but essentially only our government can do that. That said – if our voices combined are loud enough – an increase in at least 5% Marine Protected Areas, taking us to 10%, could happen!”

Seb Goldswain is widely regarded as one of the finest contemporary guitarists in South Africa. A native of Durban, he graduated from the University of KwaZulu Natal in 2015 with a degree in Jazz and Popular music, and now regularly tours performing his own brand of fiery solo acoustic guitar shows. His mesmerizing and intricate playing, which sounds more like a full band playing than a solitary acoustic guitar, has gained him fans across the globe. Seb’s inspirational live shows are a must-see and have led him to open for international pop-star George Ezra and to be recognised as a brand ambassador for bespoke instrument companies Guitar Gallery and AER Amplifiers.

8pm: Pretty & The Music
“I believe the world is my playground, armed with words, creativity, hunger for new adventures and curiosity for new experiences, I’m headed out to play.”

Born in kwaMashu and raised in iMbali, Pretty Olifant was brought up by a force of strong women to be a witty, unwavering, and free-spirited soul. A social entrepreneur, brand manager and poet, Pretty is also the founder of uMgungundlovu’s arts initiative Kwasuka Sukela (Once Upon a Time). Pretty takes to the MiTH stage accompanied by Knox Mkhize on guitar and Siyabonga Ngema on Bass. Their eclectic sound zig-zags across a number of genres including African Rhythm, Soul, Jazz, Reggae, and Rhythm and Blues underpinned with poetry.

7pm: Father and Son
Father & Son, named after the famous Cat Stevens song, is the Hilton (KZN)-based duo of Charles (father - vocals and guitar) and Michael (son - rhythm) Webster. A founder of Music in The Hills (MiTH - www.mith.co.za), Charles is a well-known performer on the KZN Midlands circuit with strong roots in folk-rock. Michael is in matric this year and is an accomplished young drummer-percussionist. The Webster men will perform a selection of well-known covers, sprinkled with a couple of originals, and look forward to making a special memory (before Michael leaves for university) warming the stage for our later performers.

Laddsworth pupil earns Gold Medal for Gymnastics

Lily Smit gymnasticsLily Smit, a Grade 5 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, took part in the Glenwood Invitational Rhythmic Gymnastics Competition on Saturday, 14 November 2020.

Lily performed a Level 3 Free Dance and received a Gold Medal. She came First in Level 3. Lily also achieved the highest score out of all the Level One to Three competing gymnasts.

Laddsworth Cubs receive Leaping Wolf Badge

Laddsworth logoLaddsworth pupils Eben van Eeden (Grade 5) and Tayla Street (Grade 4) were awarded their Leaping Wolf Badges in October 2020. Eben and Tayla are members of the 1st Hilton Scout and Cub Group. The Leaping Wolf is the highest badge a Cub can achieve.

As part of Tayla’s Leaping Wolf project, focused on the need for early childhood development for school readiness in children. Prior to lockdown, Tayla spent Saturday mornings with the young children at the Salvation Army Children’s home and used her own occupational therapy exercises to design a programme that would be fun for pre-schoolers. She also encouraged her Cubs group at First Hilton to donate baby formula, nappies, cream, soap etc to the Salvation Army.

Eben focused on Quality Education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all and donated books and bottle tops to Singakwenza. For his Personal Challenge he sailed a Halcat by himself, with dad as crew member.

HRA - Special Rating Area Circular

"As residents of Hilton, we are all aware of what a special place this is. Hilton has so much to offer, which accounts for its increasing popularity as a place to live. It is in all our interests that we work together to maintain and improve our village."

The purpose of this circular is to inform Hilton Ratepayers of the initiative which the HRA is taking with the intention of establishing a Special Rating Area (SRA).

What is an SRA?

It is a defined area within a Municipality where, following a referendum, the ratepayers agree to establish an SRA. The boundaries of the SRA do not have to coincide with Ward boundaries. A simple majority of all ratepayers voting to support the establishment of the SRA is necessary in order for it to be declared.

Why do we need an SRA?

An SRA will allow the community to identify and support projects in our area. We will all contribute a relatively modest amount on a monthly basis, providing an assured source of income to finance the projects the community prioritises.

What will it cost, and who runs the SRA?

The SRA receives its finances through a levy on rates, which the Municipality collects and pays over to the SRA. This extra levy (possibly between 2 and 5 percent of rates) is managed by a Section 21 Company which is elected by the ratepayers and answerable to them. The Municipality is represented on the Board of the SRA.

What will the SRA do?

This will depend on the wishes of the ratepayers. It is not intended that the SA carry out functions one would normally expect from the Municipality. The vision is that the SRA will function by providing extras that will make Hilton a safer and even more desirable place in which to live and work. Security would be an important function, but there are many other ideas we can explore. These could include the introduction of cycle tracks, improving the pavements and sidewalks, managing the verges, and upgrading taxi ranks and transport infrastructure. The process of engaging the community will identify the priorities.

What the SRA is not.

It is not intended to be a Municipality within a Municipality. The Municipality is represented on the SRA Board and is also required to approve the annual budget.

Are there SRAs elsewhere?

Yes. The reader is invited to Google “SRAs”. There are numerous examples in KZN and elsewhere, mainly in the Western Cape where the reader will get a good overall view of what they can accomplish. SRAs are provided for in legislation, and National Treasury has set guidelines for their establishment. Hilton is ideally suited to establishing an SRA.

What has been done so far?

The Hilton Ratepayers’ Association has received pro-bono legal assistance and prepared a draft policy document as well as the draft by-law. These are essentially copy and paste documents from other jurisdictions, so we are not entering new territory. The draft documents have been lodged with the Municipality and we hope they will be approved by the end of the year. They will provide the legal framework that will enable us to proceed.

What happens after this?

A period of consultation with the Hilton community starts with the following objectives:

  1. Identifying the area to be covered by the SRA
  2. Public consultations and meetings
  3. A referendum

Should the majority of residents in the designated area decide against the SRA, then that is the end of the matter.

If, however, they vote in favour of the SRA, the next steps would be:

  1. Elect persons to serve on the Board of the Section 21 Company
  2. Draw up a budget that reflects the wishes of the community.

This is the first circular in this regard, and the HRA will ensure that all ratepayers are kept informed of progress. We would welcome any feedback.

HRA - Community Brief November 2020

hra news augELECTRICITY SUPPLY CONCERNS - Vegetation encroachment of the Msunduzi Municipal electrical infrastructure is an ongoing cause of faults, particularly in the Winterskloof area. We would like to remind residents to submit any information to the HRA where this has been identified within private property, or where vegetation from within a private property is encroaching any electrical infrastructure adjacent to a private property but outside the private property boundary itself. The frequency of faults in the Winterskloof area is significantly high and mainly due to vegetation encroachment, particularly when wet or during windy conditions.
 
It would be in the interests of all residents living in this area to make a concerted effort to identify any potential problem areas and submit same to the HRA. Rob Maitland-Stuart has been liaising with the Msunduzi Electricity Dept., with a view to getting this issue addressed via routine line clearance patrols. The applicable manager responsible for Ops and Maintenance has given the undertaking that a plan will be established soonest and the work scheduled accordingly.
 
Furthermore, the primary 33kV supply to Hilton continues to be of major concern and Rob together with the HRA have attended several meetings with the Msunduzi Municipality to get this matter attended to as a matter of urgent priority. The latest status provided by the municipality is to have the 33kV network upgraded in this financial year (2020/21) by replacing all 33kV cable sections with heavier equivalents and thereby maximise the power transfer capability with that of the overhead line sections that were upgraded some 7 years ago.
 
In so doing, the two 33kV feeders supplying Hilton’s Crossways S/S will be far more robust and have the necessary redundancy required to ensure that if one of the feeders faults the other will be more than capable of supporting the ever-increasing Hilton load. In stating that however, there still remain major concerns w.r.t. the Crossways Primary S/S itself in that it is long overdue for major refurbishment/replacement (46 years old) and currently does not provide the necessary transformation redundancy required, having 2 x 15MVA 33/11kV transformers installed supplying a load of ±18MVA. Rob and his HRA team continue to engage with the municipality w.r.t. all these concerns and trust these efforts will eventually produce fruit at some point.

New Development Looking for Local Logo Design Talent

Shift Capital, developers of the new Hilton Siding Shopping Centre, have begun transforming the vacant plot on 1 Park Lane (corner of Park Lane and Hilton Avenue) by cutting down invasive species. As Phase 1 construction begins, the developers are running an exciting logo design competition, challenging the public from Hilton and surrounds to submit a logo design for the new centre. Covering an area of 3884 square metres and located on the busiest section of Hilton Avenue, Hilton Siding aims to become one of the growing village’s most convenient and affordable shopping centres. The land has always been zoned for commercial purposes, but has remained undeveloped and has become an area of urban decay.
 
Opening in December 2021, Hilton Siding aims to be Hilton’s family-orientated, eco-friendly shopping centre of choice. Anchored by a new FreshX concept Checkers, a Clicks pharmacy, Seattle Coffee, and family favourites like Nandos and Ocean Basket, Hilton Siding provides an affordable one-stop-shop for a parent or professional’s daily needs, right on their way to school or work.
 
The design and architecture incorporate elements from the old railway line, paying homage to Hilton’s heritage. The starting point has been to respect the history of the site and the fact that it used to host railway lines. The architecture uses Corten steel elements, I-beams with aged brickwork, and industrial style steel doors and windows to achieve a ‘railway station’ feel. Some of the original steel arch elements will also be used as design features.
 
The centre is more than just a shopping destination— the covered walkways, promenade, amphitheatre and open spaces lend themselves to gatherings such as picnics, fitness events, performances, markets, heritage tours or a place to simply chill out while enjoying the outdoors with family and friends.
