South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) - Central Zone Festival

SAGF Central Zone 1Laddsworth Pupils took part in the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) Central Zone Festival, which was held in Pietermaritzburg from 14 – 16 June 2018. Over the 3 days 1 050 gymnasts participated.

Michael Dottridge (Grade 3) represented KZN in the Level 1 (8 – 9 year category), and achieved a bronze medal.

Hope Greeff (Grade 5) represented KZN in the Level 2 (10 – 11 year category), and also achieved a bronze medal.

Royal Show Crafts and Home Industries

Royal Show Craft 002Laddsworth Primary School pupils entered their sewing pieces into the Junior Section for Crafts and Home Industries at the Pietermaritzburg Royal Show recently.

Kayleigh Henderson, a Grade 4 pupil won 2nd Prize for her cross-stich bookmark, 3rd Prize for her embroidered cat key ring and 3rd Prize for decorative Christmas cushion.

Megan Brown (Grade 7) was awarded 1st prize for her cross stich cushion. Megan received the highest score in her section and was also awarded a gift voucher.

On Thursday, 14 June 2018, the Laddsworth Cross-Country Team had their last training session of the year. They ran their last session in their pajamas and ended off by having hot chocolate and marshmallows.
 
The Laddsworth Cross Country Team, with pupils ranging from Grade 1 to 7, have excelled this year, due to their dedication of hard training and braving the cold and frost in early mornings training sessions.

MiTH billing for Wednesday, 20 June 2018

Charles Webster brings his entire family to the stage, this time - along with a few surprise friends. The MiTH founder will be teaming up with a variety of artists to perform everything from jazz standards to pop and rock covers. Charles' influences include everything from musical theatre to ACDC, Simon & Garfunkel to Green Day. There will be something for everyone in this set. Not to be missed.
 
8pm - Erin Fourie and Daniel Rossouw
What can we say about this talented duo? Erin's acoustic folk and her lilting voice are legendary in these parts, got her to the final ten on Idols. She is a subtle musician, skilled on guitar, with fabulous vocals. Erin’s favourite bands include Regina Spektor, Tori Amos, Pearl Jam, Ingrid Michaelson and Ani DiFranco. Her dream is to write an original musical! Daniel Rossouw is a talented guitarist and vocalist, and a regular part of the dynamic Pan Latino lineup. His partnership with Kyle Baker in Aymira has also earned him great respect on the Midlands music scene. These two fine artists are combining to provide MiTH patrons with a magical, musical experience. Also - remember to go and see them in a show at the Hexagon Theatre, soon!
 
9pm - Nosihe Zulu (pictured)
Nosihe Zulu was born and raised in Pietermaritzburg. Having grown up in a musical home with parents who inspired her musical interests by inspiring her to play the piano at a young age, she naturally fell in love with music. The singer/songwriter is now based in Durban and furthering her studies towards her second degree in Jazz Voice Performance at UKZN. Nosihe grew up in an active church community that gave her many platforms to share her gift of singing at various functions and church events. She soon realized that she not only enjoyed singing, but also relished performing and entertaining too. Her piano playing coupled with her eclectic singing voice provides her with a diverse musical range that produces songs inspired by many genres: from Pop, Jazz to Rnb and Soul. Nosihe has had the privileged of sharing the stage with many artists. The game-changing highlight of her career was her participation in Season 12 of the international singing competition Idols-South Africa in 2016. She went on to claim the eighth position, overall. Nosihe is passionate about making a mark and sharing her love for music and is by no means slowing down the momentum gained over the last few years. As she completes her degree, she spends her time touring with her band and performing corporate gigs at uShaka Marine World, Zimbali, Bat Centre and Elangeni. In 2018, Nosihe has her sights on doing a nation-wide tour and is working on completing and releasing her solo EP. Aside from being a bandleader in her own right sings with many up and coming; and established bands in Durban from Jazz to Salsa including Sibusiso Mash, Manteca, The Jazz Minkeys, Beat-Route, Chloe Clark, The Brunettes and Freeman and the Freemen.

MiTH is a semi-open mic music club. An opportunity for musicians to share the joy of their music with a friendly audience which includes fellow musicians – who have all “been there” too. (Non-musicians welcome too!) Take the N3 to Hilton, take the Hilton turnoff and go South into the Village (away from Hilton College). Travel 5,2km along Hilton Avenue (past two sets of traffic lights and Crossways Pub) and keep going straight as Hilton Avenue turns into Dennis Shepstone Drive. At the 5,2km mark, Knoll Drive will be on your right – the entrance to MiTH is the *second* entrance on your left into The Knoll Historic Guest Farm.

Grace College at KZN Midlands Heads' breakfast

lawrence luksich fannin cato hvGrace College hosts a quarterly Heads' Breakfast at Fern Hill Hotel in the KZN Midlands for Heads from local schools. At the most recent event Kathryn Fannin spoke about barriers to learning and specifically dyslexia, which is the most common barrier with 1 in 10 people having it. She looked at various learning strategies that can be implemented in classrooms to make them dyslexic friendly and to help learners achieve to their full potential. Kathryn also touched on the Davis Dyslexia Association and their training programs.

Nurdles still a threat on World Oceans Day

World Oceans Day Jacqui HulleyIn the lead up to World Ocean’s Day on 8 June, 26 girls from the St Anne’s Enviro Club recently volunteered to collect litter on the Durban South Beaches.
 
Beaches that appeared on arrival to look litter free, were anything but, as the girls proceeded to fill 7 large bags with litter including nearly 100 straws and plenty of toxic nurdles that are still polluting our oceans after the container spill more than 6 months ago.

Laddsworth Eco-Club Celebrates World Environment Day

Eco clubOn Monday 4 June 2018, the Laddsworth Eco Club held a special assembly to celebrate World Environment Day.
 
This year’s theme is ‘Reducing plastic waste’.
 
Special Guest Ms Antonia Makhabela from Shea O’Connor Combined School in Nottingham Road gave a presentation on the rehabilitation of the wetland at their school and how they have managed to ban the use of plastic in their school.

The Hilton Quarry Project

JPJ Team 002The Hilton Quarry project is a partnership between the Ken Collins Charity Trust and Grace College to rehabilitate the natural environment in the once derelict quarry.
 
It is managed and implemented by JPJ Landscaping and recently received three distinguished national awards from SALI (South African Landscapers Institute) at the SAGIC (South African Green Industry Council) conference last week.
 
 
The following awards were received in the following different categories:

• National Trophy Award – Best Environmental Landscape category
• Gold Award – Best Environmental Landscape Work category
• Gold Award – Best Water wise category

Grace College boys scoop top places at Trashion Show

The Dargle Conservancy’s annual Trashion Show is a celebration of the creative use of waste. Trash fashion is created each year at Grace College in art class by our Grade 9 students, so this event provided them with the perfect platform to showcase their designs and to see what others are doing.
 
In the Senior Boys category Brynn Parry won first prize in his own creation and Gareth Edwards placed second. Gareth kindly modelled the outfit on behalf of Erin Lane as she could not attend. This outfit was designed by Erin Lane, Sebastion Homan, Caylin Muller and Alex Kuhn.
 
Larissa Van Wyk and Ashlee Rock won prizes for attention to detail in the completion of their designs in the Senior Girls category. Larissa's dress was designed by herself, Nicholas De Klerk, Donovan Baugh, Erin Crookes and Ashlee Rock while Ashlee wore a design by Gareth Edwards, Ross Huxtable and Karl Rindfleisch.
 
Grace College is delighted with the collaborative efforts and enthusiasm of all these students.

Laddsworth young cyclists in Karkloof Classic

karkloofLaddsworth pupils took part in the Karkloof Classic on Sunday, 27 May 2018.

Stuart Temple, a Grade 4 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School took part in the 20km MTB and was placed 4th in the under 10 age group.

Bryn Horsley (Grade 1) and Skeet van Zuydam (Grade 1) completed the 10km MTB race.

Storming 7s victory for Grace College

sibisi baugh hvIn the final Wembley Sevens Series the Grace College Seniors finished mid-table and our Juniors finished at the top of their category.

In our Senior Final the score was 27 – 5 with the win going to Trinityhouse, Tinley Manor. The Senior series was won by Waterfall College. The senior squad played hard throughout the season.

The junior squad ended off a really good season with a victory over Reddam House, Umhlanga in the final. The score as the final whistle blew was 10 - 0. Both teams were really committed to practising. The final was a massive game, it was like facing the giants. Reddam beat Grace College easily during the league match and we made plans for a comeback which was well executed, our defensive strategy saved us in the first half and we were able to fight harder in the second to finish 10 – 0 up. The tackling was superb.
Tom Cornish, scrum-half, had a storming game and scored the first try. He charged down a kick, regathered and scored. Vuyo Zuma rounded off the win with a late try.

This was the first time Grace College put two teams on the field for the 7s rugby season, the B team being comprised of mainly Grade 8 boys.
