Wine-lovers and food-fanatics from Hilton and surrounds can look forward to testing, sampling and pairing wines, from top wineries from around the world, with local dishes at the annual Hilton Food & Wine Fair which takes place on Friday, 8 September at the Protea Hotel in Hilton.

The Fair, now in its sixth year, offers guests an evening of mingling with the Hilton community while enjoying local and international wines and a plethora of bite-sized dishes while playing their part in giving back to Hilton Pre-Primary School.

“Our annual Hilton Food & Wine Fair brings the tastes of the world’s wineries to the community and provides an opportunity to relax and enjoy socialising with family, friends and neighbours,” says Hilton Quarry Superspar & Tops’ Store Manager, Greg Downs.

In 2011, the Hilton Food & Wine Fair partnered with Hilton Pre-Primary School to raise funds for the school. This year, all fundraising will go towards upgrading “the Ducklings” area, their youngest class of children.

Hilton Pre-Primary’s Principal Suzie Hilliar says the funds raised at the annual event has enabled the school to invest in the education of teachers, upgrade their sewerage system, purchase a JoJo Tank and fix general maintenance issues.

“We are so appreciative of all the effort that Hilton Quarry Superspar and the community put into the wellbeing of our school,” said Hilliar.

“We are passionate about the local community and hope to make a difference within the community’s structures with events like the Hilton Food & Wine Fair. Hilton Pre-Primary School do a wonderful job in providing our children with a solid base to make the most out of their schooling future,” says Downs.

Wineries taking part in this year’s event include Vrede en Lust, Olive Brook (Tops Wines) and Beverage Emporium who will show case various wines and craft beers. In addition, a delicious selection of local cheeses and delicatessen sampling boards will be available from Col’Tempo, Oscars Deli Meats, Riversmead Poultry, Triple A Beef, Indezi River Creamery, Gourmet Greek, and Graceland Cheese.

Make sure you diarise Friday, 8 September to experience an evening of indulgence with Hilton Quarry Superspar & Tops, at the Protea Hotel in Hilton. Tickets are R100 per person and are available in-store or at the door. The Fair starts at 6pm, make sure that you and your friends don’t miss out by booking your tickets in advance.

MiTH hits the mark this week in terms of promoting new, young talent, with two significant contributions by local youngsters.

 

7pm – 7.50pm – TREVERTON
Treverton College offers music as an extramural activity and pupils can take lessons in piano, guitar, voice or recorder. They tend to be involved in a lot of different activities and also love being on stage. The school enters pupils for ABRSM exams in piano, theory or recorder and with the guitar they mostly do Rockschool or Trinity. Most learners opt to do music in an informal way, though. There are eight Treverton learners in this year's KZN Midlands Youth Choir, and five of them travelled to the UK with the choir during the past holidays. Several of these will be coming to MiTH this week: Vusi Fakazi and Sylvia Wu: Piano and voice; Sne Fakazi: vocal solo and duet with Vusi Fakazi; Barrie Ferreira and Tasmin Reed: piano and vocal duet; Annabelle Eedes: vocal solo; Khumo Pege: saxophone solos; Asanda Makhubo; vocal solos.

 

8.00pm – 9.00pm – HOWICK HIGH BAND
Under the tutelage of the effervescent Mark Houston, the Howick High School band has a distinguished history of having a lot of fun and making some excellent music. Covering classic pop and rock tunes and a bit of jazz, the band makes a comeback to the MiTH stage before three of its members submerge themselves in the challenges of the examination home stretch for the class of 2017. The band includes Rhiannon Reid who recently performed at both MiTH and Xmas in July with her father and brother. Don’t miss what will undoubtedly be a worthwhile musical wander interspersed with Mark’s usual witticisms.

 

9.00pm – 10.00pm – LARRY AMOS (Pictured)
Widely regarded by his peers as the 'best blues guitarist in the country', Larry Amos is not only that… A UNIQUE and incredibly versatile talent, Larry Amos is held in highest regard by faithful fans and fellow musicians. For those of us old enough to recollect, Larry Amos was the driving force of Baxtop, an original blues-rock band from South Africa. 7.15pm – 7.45pm – KEVIN GURNEY & BRETT PAINTER
Brett and Kevin are musicians from Kwazulu-natal, South Africa. They mostly do covers ranging from rock to folk music, with influences ranging from Linkin Park and Seether to Ben Howard and Passenger. The two guitarists will be playing together for the first time although Kevin has played at MiTH before.

 

8.00pm – 8.30PM – BIANCA SANTORO
An amazingly talented youngster from the Midlands, another product of the Kéch Sánchez school with one of the sweetest voices and one of the most confident stage presences you'll see from a teenager, Bianca will win you over with her musicality and her charming wit. She is rising rapidly in KZN’s musical ranks and is not to be missed.

 

8.45pm – 9.30pm – TATUM HOLDER
Tatum Holder is a Singer/Songwriter who plays alternative Indie/Folk covers and original songs. She is self-taught and plays both guitar, ukulele and harmonica. Her original songs have a positive and uplifting feel. You can expect a soulful and unique range of vocals and guitar as well as happy-go-lucky ukulele tunes. She has played at various well known places including such as La Casa, Music in The Hills, Northwood Crusaders Club - Sol Sunday Sessions, The Cavern and Crinkly Bottom. She has also been invited to play at The 12th White Mountain Acoustic Festival on the 30th September this year, this will be her biggest gig yet.

Grace College pupils recently participated in a weekend filled with fun activities, sunny days, and lots of learning.

 

‘ATKV-Drakensville was such a treat with heated swimming pools, trampolines and a beautiful view of the Berg. Our days were filled with exciting activities such as hiking, abseiling, swimming, zip lining and so much more. With our own mini kitchen in our fancy accommodation, it really did feel like we were on a mini vacation rather than a camp. The camp leaders were always happy to help (even if it meant translating instructions into English so that we could understand). The food was delicious and we were always grateful for the wonderful meal after our busy days. It was an experience I would recommend to anyone, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the time away.’ Said Megan Pluke

Grace College hosted The Hilton Car Show which attracted a fair number of collectible cars as well as Subaru Pietermaritzburg and Halfway Ford. On the day top class coffee was served, delicious food was sold and a jumping castle for the young children added a festive air to the show. This car show will definitely be an annual event on the Grace College calendar.
