Three St Anne's staff members, Mrs Jennifer Forrest, Mrs Sandra Schwartz and Mr Craig Elmer-English, were recently afforded the unforgettable opportunity of spending three days in the wilderness area of the iMfolozi Reserve in Northern KZN. Mr Rob Humphry of the Wilderness Leadership School invited staff from a few local schools to experience the trail in order to gain an appreciation of the benefits thereof for our learners. The following report, written by Physical Sciences teacher, Sandra Schwarts, sums up their experience....

"Led by guides Siphiwe and Janet (with big guns!), and laden with our bedding, food, cooking utensils and personal items, we set off from the cars 'into the wild'. A safety briefing made it clear what constituted 'cover' (i.e. not a flimsy bush) and when we would actually need to climb a tree. Within five minutes we came across a herd of breeding elephants and had to backtrack and make a two hour detour (uphill and in sweltering heat!) before arriving at our riverside camp. We came across elephants, herds of buffalo, lion in the distance, a crocodile in our stretch of river and a lazy puff-adder 10m from our sleeping area. Craig was in his element, explaining to us the habits of ant-lions, dung-beetles and trapdoor spiders, which bones belong where in a buffalo skeleton and spotting a rarely sighted chameleon in the trees around our camp. We were witness to majestic birds of prey in flight and the even more majestic Milky Way in the clear night sky – astonishingly, even the moons of Jupiter were visible with binoculars.

The hardships (sleeping outdoors on a thin mat, nightly guard duty, drinking purified, luke-warm river water, no deodorant, no toilets or toilet paper – just a spade and leaves, and washing in the river) were irrelevant as we experienced everything the brochure had promised: "a physical, mental and spiritual adventure during which trailists discover a sense of wonder and re-examine their priorities. A chance to exist for a period in the original, primitive atmosphere of wilderness; to watch from a respectful distance the intimate lives of wild animals and to listen at night to the compelling sounds of the African bushveld."
We are so grateful to the WLS for this amazing opportunity and will definitely be aiming to send more St Anne's staff and girls on the trail in the future."

IRONMAN ANNOUNCES ADDITION OF THE
STANDARD BANK IRONMAN® 70.3® DURBAN TRIATHLON

HANAU/PORT ELIZABETH/TAMPA (January 27, 2015) – IRONMAN is pleased to announce the addition of South Africa's second IRONMAN® 70.3® race, the Standard Bank IRONMAN 70.3 Durban triathlon. The inaugural race will be held on August 2, 2015.

Durban, located on South Africa's east coast in the KwaZulu-Natal province, is known for its warm, subtropical climate and world-famous surfing beaches with a unique cultural and urban diversity. Durban was recently named one of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World, recognized for cultural, historical, environmental, economic and tourism strengths and/or potential.

The Jaxx Roll played on Wednesday was won by Trevor and Pam Spring and Rodney Braithwaite. Winners of the Losers were Heather Hancock, Tim Bigg and Ian Fyvie. The second league team played against Eddels on Saturday. They won on one rink and lost on the other. Eddels won the match by one shot, thus collecting 3 points to Hilton's two.

The third league players beat Mooi River on both rinks and scored a full five points.

Pat Wilkinson, the Hilton resident behind Hilton's One Hour Warriors said, 'I kept seeing negative posts in the HRA page; and thought we needed to do something positive for our Village which was slowly disappearing under long grass and overhanging trees. The overgrown pathways left pedestrians no choice but to walk in the road. Graffiti has recently been found at Worlds View Lookout which offered a general impression of neglect to tourists visiting this attraction.

The idea is that each member of the community should dedicate one hour a week to a part of Hilton that needed cleaning up, whether it be mowing the verges, cleaning up flower beds or picking up litter.

The World's View Conservancy was spurred to take action at the Lookout point and this focus became the inaugural project for One Hour Warriors in Hilton.

We published a Facebook group where we posed the question:"Do you want to be involved?"

Within 12 hours we had 80 people join the "One Hour Warriors" Facebook group.

Additionally, people have committed to do their own projects in Hilton Gardens, Panorama Road, Vlei Road and on the corner of Cedara Road and Hilton Avenue, all spurred on by this Warrior challenge.

Group membership on Facebook is up to 109 after two weeks. Members are trying to motivate their neighbours to help with projects identified where they live. Less active people can help in ANY way they feel comfortable picking up litter, sweeping...or they can "loan" their gardeners to a project for a day.'

Grace College pupil and head girl, Megan Tychsen, was awarded honours for achieving full colours in Hockey, Indoor Hockey and Academics over the last two years. Hilton Veterinary Hospital announced, 'We have just had a report from Kevin le Roux, the Rabies control officer at Allerton, to say that there is Jackal Rabies at Nottingham Road and moving south at a serious pace. We must consider the whole of the Midlands area a risk. If your dogs and cats have not been vaccinated against Rabies in the last 3 years then please do so as soon as possible. Please the communication below seriously.'

In 2012 there was a serious outbreak of canine rabies in the Okhahlamba area. This led to a spill over into the jackal population (See concentration of cases in the northern corner of map) with a number of other wildlife species becoming victims (Caracal; Baboon; Dassie). Following an intense vaccination campaign amongst the local dog population, the disease disappeared and has not been seen in the Canine population since!

It was however suspected that we had not seen the end of the jackal cycle, and so far in the January 2015 we have had 3 jackal cases (2 in Estcourt near Wagondrift dam and now 1 near Nottingham rd) This represents a movement of nearly 130Km from the original outbreak, and I believe we can consider the whole of this midlands area now a potentially endemic Jackal rabies area.

With Eskom woes a daily headline in our tabloids and load-shedding a weekly reality for us all. These problems were not created overnight and sadly will not be solved overnight either. With our winter four months away and electrical demand far outstripping supply contingency is the keyword!

At RENEN we strive to stay at the leading edge of developments worldwide in the renewable energy sector and to this end have just returned from Europe visiting suppliers, inspecting new technology and undertaking further training. With visits to Gruppo Piazzetta, MC Fumisteria and D'Alessandro culminating in some wonderful new offerings to our clients.

We have a new staff member to the team in Nathan Davies, a Dip. Mech Eng graduate and Instrumentation Technician he is welcomed into our KZN office and will add huge value in our technical and R&D department. Welcome Nathan!

Interest in Solar PV has soared and we hope our D'Alessandro boilers, burners and warm air generators will be welcomed by the industrial and agricultural sector. These units provide amazing alternative energy solutions and are very popular in the Olive industry in Europe as they can burn Olive husks for fuel.

Calum McComb of PeopleSense is thrilled to offer his services as an Industrial/Career Psychologist to the Hilton and surrounds. Having enjoyed the fast pace rush of an exciting and successful time consulting from Johannesburg, Calum now lives in the rolling green hills of the midlands and consults from his office in Hilton House. An intrepid adventurer, in his spare time you'll find him flying his paraglider with friends, hiking in the Himalayas, exploring India and the East, or eventing his horse called Rundu.

Passionate about people, Calum launched his career as a recruitment consultant for the Kelly Group post completing his B.Com in Industrial Psychology. After some time wrestling with his curious heart and mind he eventually decided to return to the books to quench his thirst for knowledge. Calum completed his honours degree (cum laude), and then his M.Com degree in Industrial Psychology and proceeded to qualify as an Industrial Psychologist.

Calum has since consulted to major blue chip organisations across a variety of industries and specialises in talent management, psychometric assessments, emotional intelligence and career coaching, career guidance, and team and leadership development. He owns and runs his own boutique talent management consulting firm called PeopleSense and his mission is to help individuals, teams and organisations to unlock their human potential and be awesome.

The Quarry Centre shoppers have been vocal about the arrival of car guards at their favourite shopping centre. Some applaud the introduction of additional eyes from a security perspective and others feel the car guard system is ineffectual.

Lynda Lees, The Quarry Centre manager says, 'We have been receiving a huge amount of pressure to have additional eyes out in the car park. It is to this end that we decided to put in the car guards. They are supplied through a reputable security company and are all vetted before coming on site. The car guards do not replace the security at the Quarry. The number of security guards employed has not been reduced.

We do understand that a number of our customers are in and out of the centre a number of times a day, but paying the car guards is purely voluntary. You are under no obligation whatsoever. There is a book at the entrance of SPAR on the left hand side for you to write your comments in this regard, good or bad.

The new Grade R class started with great excitement at Hilltops Preschool in Hilton last week! The children happily got settled into their brand new classroom, complete with adjoining fantasy room and hugely expanded playground.

Hilltops Preschool has gone from strength to strength under the loving guidance of the two founders, Angie Muggleton and Debbie Coombes (Ange and Debs to all who know them)!
 The school has become known for it's family- style values, outdoor farm- type location and of course the fantastic teachers and assistants that make it the special place that it is.
The classes for ages 18 months- 3 years are full at the moment with a waiting list, but there are still spaces for ages 4, 5 and 6 (Grade RRR, RR and R).

Mariánne Eriksson, local art gallery owner and eclectic artist, has been painting scenes of Hilton in the mist, the Drakensberg and flowers from her garden. Click here to view gallery images.

This versatile artist's works are not easily identified as she is equally skilled in many styles and moves from one technique to another depending on which classical music she is listening to. Mariánne has been painting since age 13, her earliest works were produced while listening to Tchaikovsky.

Pictured here is Mariánne with one of her misty Hilton paintings which was done in the abstract impressionism style, painted while listening to Tchaikovsky, List and Vivaldi. For Mariánne impressionism provides a way of painting from her heart. On holiday in the Drakensberg, at Silver Hills Resort, she painted the view while listening to Rachmaninoff, a Russian composer.

Mariánne has written 13 children's books, two of which have been self- published. She is excited to soon be meeting with Shuter and Shooter to discuss completing the other 11 manuscript which have been the result of a project spanning decades of commitment. Having enjoyed a privileged upbringing as a child, her books aim to share her childhood experiences. The books include a visit to the opera, air travel, spending time at the park and fancy buffet dining. Mariánne hopes to see the books translated into other SA languages. Pictured below is the cover of the first book which is on sale in her gallery.
