Music is My Life – Joseph Shabalala and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a directorial debut documentary feature produced by veteran filmmaker Carolyn Carew from Free Women Films and directed by Sowetan-born director Mpumi “Supa” Mbele, has been announced as the National Film and Video Foundation’s (NFVF) International Feature Film submission for the 96th Annual Academy Awards (2023 – Oscars).

This is the first time a documentary has been selected since South Africa began submitting films for nomination in the International Feature Film category in the Annual Academy Awards since 1989.

Shining a spotlight on Ladysmith Mambazo’s frontman, the legendary Joseph Shabalala, the film explores his rise to international fame with his iconic isicathamiya acapella group following their musical contributions to Paul Simon’s award-winning album Graceland, which went on to sell over 20 million copies. Music is My Life, was filmed over five years, traces his path from his humble beginnings in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa to his peaceful departure in 2020.

“We are humbled to be selected by NFVF selection committee to represent SA at the 96th Academy Award in the International Feature Film section,” says the film's Lead Producer, Carolyn Carew. “As a team, we worked tirelessly with the band, Baba Joseph’s family and the Dr Joseph Shabalala Foundation to tell his story. To be in his presence was to be left in awe of his deep commitment to his craft, informed by his love of music, the land, his spirituality, and his dedication to bring his unique as well as the powerful voices of Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music to the world.”

It has been selected for several local and international film festivals in America, New Zealand, Australia and Spain, to name a few.

The official nominations for the 96th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on 23 January 2024.

9pm: Dave Starke and Lizzie Gaisford
Dave Starke and Lizzie Gaisford are singer-songwriters from Eshowe, Zululand. Their “day job” is as bandmates in classic rock tribute band, The Katembas, but they are greatly looking forward to sharing some of their original songs for a MiTH audience.

Throughout her teens, Lizzie was given an annual marathon guitar lesson by her aunt, instrumentalist Jane Gaisford. The rest of the time was spent filling in the gaps by herself, resulting in a unique playing style hinged largely on alternate tunings. Described as contemporary South Africana, her lyrics highlight the highly symbolic, often overlooked details within our environments and use them as tools to trigger memory and imagination.

Dave is known for his rich voice, mellow guitar playing and poignant writing style, sharing songs about finding small slivers of hope amidst life, love and loss. Committed to musical austerity, he is known for simple arrangements that allow the words to take centre stage. Texx and the City described his 2019 album Shifting Boundaries as “An incantatory time-stopper…a crucible of pain, sorrow, love, and small mercies melted together to produce a silvery, meaningful beauty.”

This will be their first outing as a duo and in addition to some old favourites, the performance will also feature recently completed work by both artists.

8pm: Dave Imrie
Dave Imrie is a solo live performer from Durban, South Africa, specializing in looping multiple instruments with a strong focus on the guitar. His music is uplifting, featuring a blend of acoustic, pop, and a touch of rock. He has the skill to blend these styles to suit and match most occasions.

He has performed at many venues across KZN, also reaching out as far as North of Maputo in Mozambique, to a stint in the Eastern Cape.

His adventure as a musician focused initially on blues and rock with inspiration from SRV and Eric Clapton. His love for older styles of music helped him form a solid grounding of the basics. With this foundation, he has created an ability to incorporate these roots into different genres, which has proved to be the key to his success.

7pm: The Staniland Band
Ron Gevers (Cajón, drums and vocals), Muzi Kubheka (Alto and Tenor Saxophone) and John Goodall (vocals, guitar, blues harp, banjo).

Formed in 2017, The Staniland Band (previously Jorongo) is a proudly amateur outfit with blues roots that plays original songs with a South African cadence, as well as new banjo music sounds, and folk-flavoured covers.

Ron Gevers, who features on cajón, drums, and vocals, has accompanied a number of musical outfits, such as The Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters at Splashy Fen. He still lends his musical talents to various bands to this day.

John Goodall, who brings some vocals, guitar, blues harp, and banjo to the mix, has composed a fair number of folk and blues songs. He had been a solo artist playing in music venues in Eshowe, Zululand, and Pietermaritzburg before being invited to join The Gloucester Blues Project (of Pietermaritzburg). The band played for over 10 years chiefly in KZN, including Splashy Fen, and Blues Train, and at Botswana gigs before disbanding.

Muzi Kubheka, who plays alto and tenor saxophone, joined the Staniland Band in 2022. His saxophone playing has filled out and brought a new depth and dimension to the Staniland repertoire.

The Staniland Band has played primarily in and around Pietermaritzburg – sometimes joined by other musicians. The band has played at Post Postino, MiTH, local coffee shops, and supper venues, and recently, at Music in the Mountains, in the Champagne Valley.

This was a new arrival from the Wartburg area this week, a baby Nile Crocodile. Found in the Umgeni River, without injury. The concern is the growing number of Crocs in this river system. We love these cases as it always gives us an opportunity to grow and share knowledge.

Needle sharp teeth, never under estimate that jaw, even at this age, a Crocodile can give a serious bite.

The eyes are similar to those of nocturnal animals since they have a vertical slit-shaped pupils. This means they can narrow the pupil in bright light, and open it in darkness to allow more light to enter the eye.

They also potentially have what is known as trichromatic colour vision, this also means they can see equally well in the day or at night.

Weighing in at 280 grams, this tiny has a whole lot of growing to do. And in classic Crocodile style, there is simply no rush.

So... we'll keep updated on this little ones story...in a while, crocodile...

There are many benefits to having a wireless printer. A clutter-free office space; print from anywhere; shared between multiple users; and ease of use, are just some worth mentioning.

Is a wireless printer really easier to use?
Did you feel yourself doubt the bit about ease of use? It’s not surprising. Many people feel intimidated when they hear words like “wireless” and “connect”. The reality is that it's extremely easy, and we've put together 3 steps to guide you through the process.

The initial setup does require your full attention but once it’s done, you can print at will, from another building if you want to, provided you’re within reach of your shared network.

What you will need to connect to your wireless printer:
• An established and configured network connection via a wireless router.
• You will also need the wireless network name (also called SSID) and password so that you can distinguish it from other nearby networks and connect to the correct one.
• A wireless printer.

 

Step 1: Choose a strategic position to place your wireless printer

For the purposes of installing software, your wireless printer will need to be near a computer. Once you have completed your set up, you can choose a spot that’s out of the way. Plug it into the power mains and switch it on. Make sure your printer is able to pick up a decent network signal. Metal objects and walls/doors can diminish the strength of your network signal which will make it difficult to print.

When you’re selecting your spot, also try to choose a surface that will safely catch your prints, in case you’re not standing there ready to grab them.

 

Step 2: Automated setup versus manual setup

Automated: Wireless printers with a colour LCD display window will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to configure the network. The printer will detect any networks automatically. You can select the correct one (you will identify it by its network name) and select the “Connect” option. Enter the password associated with the network and you’re set to go!

Manual: Installing the software usually automatically takes care of the IP address and firewall settings. If for any reason you have to do it manually, this is how:
1. Firewall: Firewalls are designed to protect our equipment from incoming threats, like malware and viruses. Sometimes, firewalls mistake printers for a threat and prevent them from accessing the PC or the WiFi network. If you battle to establish a connection between your devices, disable your firewall and see if that helps. If this fixes the issue, go into your firewall settings and select a lower security setting.
2. Wireless security protocol: There are a few different protocol types. Your printer will want to know what type you are wanting to connect to. You can check this information with your network; it is most commonly WiFi but it may also be the old fashioned WEP.

 

Step 3: Installing your wireless printer's software

 

Once you have connected to the network, you can install the software on your computer. This software, or drivers, connect to the printer and deliver the relevant commands. Your printer will come with a CD which contains the drivers and an automated setup to follow. If your computer and printer are connected to the same network, your computer can automatically source the software needed to operate your printer from the internet.

 

Troubleshooting and wireless printer challenges
If you are having trouble, always check your network first. IT professionals agree that the majority of the time, the challenges arise as a result of the network and not the printer. Make sure your printer has a strong network signal and that your network is available and online.

Following the recent heartfelt call for urgent financial support, with an unprecedented positive response, the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) this week launched its highly sought-after annual calendar.

Titled “Dawn to Dusk” this 2024 calendar is produced in partnership with Compass Cares, the CSI division of Compass Medical Waste Services. It features a collection of breathtaking photographs of South African wild animals threatened by habitat destruction, poaching, and climate change. Well-known wildlife photographers Calvin Kotze, Hendri Venter, and Jon Warburton, as well as reserve owner, Charl Senekal, and guest photographer Tracey Lund, donated the beautiful images taken at Senekal’s Zimanga Game Reserve in Zululand. The calendar was designed by local designer and photographer Brendan Bromfield.

“In today’s digital world, this calendar is a visual reminder of things that matter,” says CROW’s Operations Director, Clint Halkett-Siddall. “Besides it being the ideal corporate or personal gift, it is one way the public can support CROW’s work to help injured, orphaned, or displaced wild animals and give them a chance to live a free life back in the wild.”

"This year marks the 15th edition of Compass Medical Waste Services dedication to supporting animal welfare through their calendar initiative. Since its inception, this project has generated over R3 million in funds for the cause of animal welfare."

With the collected funds CROW has been able to buy three vehicles that are used for rescues and releases of wild animals, seven days a week, every day of the year. In 2019, CROW used funds to upgrade the clinic where animals are treated; and in 2020 and 2021 the main monkey enclosures used for rehabilitation were rebuilt. The 2024 “Dusk to Dawn” calendar will help CROW achieve its ambition to go off the grid by using solar power to provide electricity for its entire property in Yellowwood Park, enabling the organisation to save in the long term on debilitating electricity costs.

“We have been overwhelmed by the response to the recent call for financial support,” said Halkett-Siddall at the launch. “And we would like to thank all who contributed and continue to contribute financially, and in kind, and to the media for getting the word out for us. While we are not entirely out of the woods, we are now not in any immediate crisis, which enables us to go about business as usual in helping wildlife. We are now able to focus on our other fundraising projects and long-term goals like getting the volunteer programme to capacity, developing our income-generating charity shop and indigenous nursery, as well as our vegetable garden to feed the animals. This calendar is one of several fundraisers we do, and we are hoping this year, we can break some records in selling out all 5000 copies soon.”

Angus Burns makes the trip down from Newcastle for a classic rock treat in his own unique, unmissable style.

Angus is no stranger to Midlands music lovers, having spent several years as part of local heroes, The Hairy Legged Lentil Eaters, during his time in Maritzburg, as well as the band Montana Nymph.

A man of many talents, Angus is an environmental scientist by profession, contributing to our biodiversity as part of the national management team of The World Wide Fund for Nature.

A massively skillful guitarist and singer, Angus was the front man of Durban hard rock/metal band, Stoned Henge, in his early years. He will be joined on the night by Chris Palframan, Brian Bedingfield, Roly Struckmeyer, Chris Smith and guest vocalist, Martin Godfrey.

Get ready for some blues/rock classics, with a few original songs thrown in. And bring your dancing shoes!



8pm: Brian Bedingfield

Local Bob Dylan wanna-be, Brian Bedingfield has curated a one-man show all about a peculiar obsession: Who would be the next Bob Dylan?

With some research assistance from Rob Boyd, Brian dives into this subject, with its origins in 1966, when Bob Dylan was out of the public eye for a virtual nano-second. Fuelled by the weekly music industry press of the time, rumour mills were working overtime, causing fans and record execs alike to scramble about in a desperate quest to find the next Bob Dylan.

With a smattering of choice Dylan songs thrown in for good measure, the story weaves through musical contributions from the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Loudon Wainwright III, Randy Newman, and many others.



7pm: Chris and Kaylee

Kaylee and Christopher come from very different musical backgrounds. Kaylee sang in choirs and came from a more classical background. Christopher played with various bands over the years such as The Hairies, The Bandits, and The Willie Jones Boere Orkes. They have come together as a husband and wife duo to share their love of various types of music.

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: MiTH takes place every second Wednesday at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, Knoll Drive, Hilton. Doors open at 6pm and the music will kick off at 7pm. Entrance is R50 at the door. Food and soft drinks are available for sale. A cash bar is available.

DIRECTIONS TO MiTH: Take the N3 to Hilton, take the Hilton turnoff and go South into the Village (away from Hilton College). Travel 5,2km along Hilton Avenue (past two sets of traffic lights and Crossways Pub) and keep going straight as Hilton Avenue turns into Dennis Shepstone Drive. At the 5,2km mark, Knoll Drive will be on your right – the entrance to MiTH is the *second* entrance on your left into The Knoll Historic Guest Farm.
