Hilton SAPS
“Over the last 6 months Knight Security Solutions (KSS) has been assisting members from the Hilton Police Station with Crime Prevention Operations to combat the increase in House Breakings, Theft out of M/vehicle and Theft of M/Vehicles in the Hilton residential areas. Combined operations have been planned in accordance to the Crime Threat Analysis and Crime Pattern Analysis. These operations have included vehicle patrols, foot patrols in the residential areas as well as observation duties in the plantations and along the railway line that runs through Hilton area. The information on hand is that the criminals are using the plantations and the railway line to gain access to the residential areas to avoid detection.

A good working relationship has been established between the Hilton SAPS and KSS. By combining our resources our operation have become more effective and this working relationship has had a positive effect with regards to us addressing the crime in Hilton. Hilton Vispol would like to thank the Management of KSS as well as their members who work closely and alongside the members from the Hilton Police Station for their assistance. KSS Operations update
Due to the recent high volume of crime, KSS has placed more Response vehicles on the ground. This has meant the Response crews have had to be split, but this will ensure better response times and more area coverage. Management are monitoring this accordingly and will ensure that KSS standards are not compromised.

9pm Roarke Angelbright

Roarke Angelbright is an Alt-Folk artist with Singer-Songwriter roots, born and raised in Durban. This energetic young artist takes inspiration from folk, rock, blues, indie, grunge, and hip-hop and brings these influences into the context of a solo-acoustic artist. He uses a high standard of live-looping; bringing in stacks of vocal layers, guitar, percussion, basslines, beatboxing, singing, raps, and guitar solos to craft his sound. Accompanied by the talented Nat Bruzas on percussion to put together a full, raw and authentic performance - focused on original music and storytelling with some energetic covers thrown in.

Since Roarke's last appearance at MiTH (1 year ago), he's released his debut EP (Chaotic Neutral), opened up for Matthew Mole, his latest single (Wastelands) is currently playlisted on several radio stations nationwide and he's currently finishing off his first tour (fresh off the back of the Eastern Cape stretch).'

8pm Roly Struckmeyer

Having been a fixture on the music scene in KwaZulu-Natal since the late ’80s, Pietermaritzburg-born acoustic guitarist & vocalist Roly Struckmeyer started playing the guitar at age seven. His music career began when he returned from England in 1989 to form a band known as “House On The Hill.” During his career as a performer, Roly has toured & performed with names such as Wonderboom and Landscape Prayers. He has also played with a number of amazing bands such as Butternut, The Farryl Purkiss Band & Deluxe to name a few. In 1994, while in America, he played on the Free Stage at a festival in Boulder, Colorado, and was a member of Arapaho for the last year of their career. Roly worked with Syd Kitchen in the early 2000s, and with Perez from 2001. He's now joined the latter as an official band member. He did a solo album in 2007 and has spent the last ten or twelve years in cover bands - No Fly Zone, A-frame, and more recently Rustic Spring. Most recently he formed the original duo called Is it? with Michael Goddard from Perez and Steampunk Coffee South Africa. Roly performed his new material at Splashy Fen 2019 and is excited to be creating music and to be back at MiTH.

7pm Facade

A Façade is a deceptive outer appearance. That’s Façade; a group of five matric boys, who don’t study music but use it to escape their school lives. They aren’t genre-based, but are inspired by jazz, rock, folk, and indie. Composed of five multi-instrumentalists, Façade aims to create an experience rather than a performance. The band consists of Simon Browse on drums, Richard Taylor on guitar and trumpet, James Dawson on vocals, keyboard and guitar, Richard Officer on guitar and sax, and Kombo Magara on vocals, bass, and guitar.

ABOUT MiTH:
MiTH is located at The Knoll Historic Guest Farm, Knoll Drive, Hilton. Doors open at 6 pm and the music will kick off at 7 pm. Entrance is R40 at the door.

MiTH is a semi-open mic music club. An opportunity for musicians to share the joy of their music with a friendly audience which includes fellow musicians – who have all “been there” too. (Non-musicians welcome too!) Penzil Advertising is a small home-based graphic design studio which started in June 2005. With around 30 years of experience, Kerry is an established and diverse designer. Kerry's career started at Bell Equipment in their marketing department, designing in-house and exhibition materials which included promotional items and planning for various marketing events and shows. From there she moved to Sylko Paper in Durban where she gained experience in packaging and designing gift wrap. After enjoying the world of travel, Kerry settled back into graphics at a design studio in Pietermaritzburg, and then finally starting her own business.

Her portfolio base has ranged from corporate work to packaging, promotional banners and stickers, and lots of publishing which she really enjoys and has produced her own coffee table books, with some friends, on the Drakensberg. Publishing is hard work but very rewarding. She has also been involved in a bit of photography and directs photography for one of her clients, although this is enjoyable she prefers to hand it onto a friend who is a professional photographer and videographer. With knowledge of graphics also comes the knowledge of print as most material needs to be printed, so advice can be given and this enables Kerry to see a job done from beginning to end. Clients are not only locally based, many are further afield and some are even international.

Over the years there have been once off jobs and some are long-standing jobs, no matter whether they are big or small the commitment to each client and job is the same, paying attention to detail, giving more than what is expected and producing a product that is well received.

Kerry loves working from home, meeting her clients and having the freedom to enjoy her family and friends, garden and outdoors.

Laddsworth pupils Georgina Francis (Grade 7) and Patrick Lamb (Grade 6) took part in the SA Level 2 Regional Championships in Sasolburg, from 3-5 April 2019. 63 teams participated from across Southern Africa. Patrick and Georgina swam for Penguins Swimming Club.

Georgina Francis took part in the Under 12 Age group and received a Bronze Medal for 50m Back stroke, 200m Individual Medley (Relay), 4 x 100m Freestyle (Relay) and a Gold Medal for 4 x 50m Freestyle (Relay).

Patrick Lamb participated in the Under 12 age group and received Gold Medals for 100m Freestyle, 50m Backstroke, 200m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke, 200m Backstroke.

He received Bronze Medals for 200m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly. Patrick also swam relays for the under 13-16 Age Group and received Gold Medals for 4x 50m Medley and 4 x 100m Freestyle and a Silver medal for 4 x 50m Freestyle.

In January 2007, Darren Wood completed his 100th parkrun and, to mark the occasion, I presented him with a personalised jacket. Of course, when Darren opened the 100 Club, we all thought it would remain as a small, exclusive, group of super-committed individuals who were dedicated enough to turn up 100 times.

Little did we know that 12 years later there would be 70,000 members of the 100 club, another 400 joining every week, and we'd have expanded the clubs to include a v25 Club for volunteering, plus the 50, 100, 250, and now 500 Clubs for walking or running.

As of April 2019 there are a total of 250,000 members of parkrun milestone clubs, with another two million expected to join them over the next ten years.

Perhaps naively, I originally believed we should recognise membership of these clubs with t-shirts and jackets, and that these should always be delivered individually to the parkrunner's local event, and completely for free. As great as this sounds, the financial cost is significant and, as we have grown, has come to represent a major risk to our most important principle; that parkrun events should be free, for everyone, forever.

Some time ago now, and after much consideration and consultation, we decided that whilst the clubs themselves have become fundamental to what we do, and a source of great inspiration across all stages of our respective journeys, the t-shirts are not. Therefore, even if we had the resources to finance free t-shirts for everyone, it would be inappropriate for us to spend that money on providing clothing to, by definition, some of the most healthy and happy members of our communities.

In 2015, we moved to a single global solution for milestone t-shirts, a solution that allows us to better support and understand demand. However, at that time, milestone t-shirts in South Africa were provided by Mr Price Sport, therefore parkrun South Africa was not included in the global system. Whilst we will be forever grateful to Mr Price for their support of these t-shirts, and their belief in our mission, over time the burden became too great even for them. Mr Price Sport remain a committed partner but for some time now we have not been in a position to provide South African parkrunners with milestone t-shirts.

 

What does this mean for you?

After an extensive period of testing, which included the parkrun South Africa Leadership Team and all parkrun South Africa Ambassadors, we have, with immediate effect, taken the decision to move parkrun South Africa into the Global milestone system, bringing it in line with all other parkrun territories.

From this point forward, when you join a milestone club you will be directed to the global ordering platform, where you will have the options of declining your t-shirt, pre-ordering it if it's not in stock, or ordering it if it is. We will then, where we have stock, send your t-shirt straight to you, significantly reducing workload for our volunteer teams.

Currently, for South Africans in particular, this does present two significant change;

1. Whilst the t-shirt will be free, the cost for postage and packing is approximately R250.

2. With the South African postal system as it is, we cannot guarantee successful delivery.

Whilst I understand that this may be disappointing to you, I am afraid that currently these issues are unavoidable if we are to continue offering milestone t-shirts to South African parkrunners.

I am aware that approximately 11,000 of you have already ordered your t-shirts, in good faith and at the request of parkrun South Africa, but are yet to receive them. Bruce and Gill Fordyce have requested that for those individuals parkrun South Africa itself will, as a gesture of good will, manufacture a one-off batch of milestone t-shirts and ship them to events using the old system. If you are one of those 11,000 people they will write to you directly with instructions as to what to do.

Finally, I do hope you share my opinion that the true value of parkrun is in its ability to bring together communities as they get active in the great outdoors. And that whilst t-shirts are a nice thing to have, they are not fundamental to what we do, and, importantly, providing them at zero cost threatens the future of everything we hold so dear about parkrun and all it stands for.
