Laddsworth Grade Six pupils went on their Annual Grade Tour to Berg Venture from Wednesday, 20 to Friday, 22 February 2019.

 

The Grade Sixes took part in various activities including Foefie-Sliding, Tree Climbing, Abseiling, Horse Riding, Hiking, Obstacle Course and a ‘Potjie Kos’ Competition.

What does an educator do? Diabetes is a multisystem disease affecting most organs in the body. Managing diabetes holistically in a team means each member focuses on their area of expertise.

For the educator this is explaining how insulins work, how the different oral meds work, what sugars should and could be at different times of the day, dangers of hypos and highs, how to inject, how to test etc in the newly diagnosed.

One very important aspect is setting goals around targets like A1c as well as variability, post meal values etc as well as any other goals regarding diabetes like exercise, staving off burn out and depression and a whole host of possible goals.

The educator in many respects is a co-ordinator or conductor of the processes and aids very much with direction and the trajectory of the diabetic path.

This critical role actually can make the difference in getting to target as well as staying at target which translates to less health expenditure downstream as well as healthier functioning patients with quality of life.

Firing up the 2019 SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, the first two regionals tip off in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday 3 March.

Host for the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional is St John’s D.S.G. while up the road, The Wykeham Collegiate will play host to the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional. The central games get underway at 07.30am and half an hour later for the northern regional. The top two teams for both regionals will duel it out for their regional final at 01.25pm at The Wykeham Collegiate, and at 02.50pm at St John’s D.S.G. The prize givings will follow the finals for each regional.

Central hosts, St John’s are one times winners having advanced to the Grand Finals in 2017, they take on defending champs Epworth School together with six times victrix, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School. Also part of the central regional are Russell High, Alexandra High, Maritzburg Christian School and Carter High.

Wykeham have also earned the regional title once in the second tournament in 2012. St Anne’s College have dominated the area winning the regional crown seven times. Hoping to topple Saint’s domination are school teams from Voortrekker High, Grace College, Howick High and Treverton and of course hosts, The Wykeham Collegiate.

Both regionals will be using the round robin format with a win earning them 4 points, a draw with goals 2 points, a goalless draw 1 point and a loss zero points. The match duration will last 20 minutes of rolling time.

Following the first two Pietermaritzburg regionals, the tournament then travels to Durban for the Durban North and Durban Central Regionals taking place the weekend after. Once all the regionals have concluded, the regional finalists converge on the Grand Finals which takes place on 20 and 21 July at St Mary’s D.S.G.

Grade 12 St Anne’s pupil, Anna Thornton-Dibb, has been selected for the National Ladies Water Polo Team that will participate in the Inter Continental Tournament, hosted in Perth from the 25 – 31 of March.

9pm Zeeroover

Zeerover is an unlikely, Richards Bay-based duo with over seventy years in the music industry, combined. “The Bone Collector,” aka Dr Eugene Viljoen, (Orthopaedic Surgeon) and “The Car Guard,” aka Corrie Pretorius (businessman), came together to form Zeeroover in 2012. Both, composers, vocalists and instrumentalists, they have honed not only their skills, but a sound that is remarkably unique and appealing to a broad spectrum of audiences.

 

The Bone Collector masterfully combines the styles of Jon Gomm, Tommy Emanuel and a genuinely unique percussive guitar technique, produces a full bass, percussion and jazz/blues guitar sound - effectively a three-piece band on his own. Also known as Zwarte Piet, he hails from the alternative Afrikaans rock “Zwarte Piet Band,” which wowed audiences at “InniBos,” “Splashy Fen,” “Poets Porch,” “Dollos Fees” and many other stages around SA. Eugene is a most remarkable and very skilled guitarist and composer with a passion for his art and a unique commitment to guitaring.

 

The Car Guard is a multi-instrumentalist, adding touches of acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano accordion, keyboard and lead vocals to create a full, rich and warm sound. Son of the legendary “Spies & Plessis” funny man, Danny Pretorius, and having toured SA in bands like “Insane Obsession,” “Slightly Touched,” “Vagabond” and also having had a solo career, Corrie joined Eugene in 2012 to form Zeeroover.

 

Unlike anything you’ve heard before, thee chaps cover most of the iconic greats with their very distinctive style and sound. Musical purists, they’re admirably zealous about their “no back tracks” policy. Zeeroover have taken time and (more time) to produce a sound and a show that is professional, classy and entertaining. 8pm – Ryno Theronmusic

Ryno Theron is a multi-instrumentalist, who focuses mainly on experimental guitar. Hailing from Durban, his first year as a solo artist was very successful, having played 40 shows, which included headlining spots and sharing the bill with some South African music legends. He also had released his debut electric album, and follow up acoustic fingerstyle EP. Ryno's strong influences include post-rock, blues and different forms of ambient music.

 

7pm - Scrapyard Junkies (feat Summer du Preez)

Scrapyard Junkies consists of a bunch of unmentionables who started jamming together at the notorious Thistle Hotel (aka Boshoff St Country Club). Junkies live sets usually include original indy tunes, covers from mid 20th-century jazz standards through post-punk and grunge to contemporary indie-rock, and improvised jams to keep everyone on edge. The Junkies also, and uniquely, have a specialist tambourine player formerly known as 'the swish'.

Laddsworth swimmers put in excellent performances at the Midlands Championship Gala, which was held at The Wykeham Collegiate on Thursday 31 January (Boys) and Saturday 2 February (Girls) 2019.

 

Nicholas Kruger, Grade 7 (Under 13) received Gold Medals for 100m Breaststroke, 200m Breaststroke, 100m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 100m Butterfly.

Amy Goddard, a Grade 6 pupil at Laddsworth Primary School, passed her Grade 4 Royal Academy of Dance Solo Performance in October 2018.
