Hilton's very own Music in The Hills (MiTH) has been going since March 26, 2014, and has grown to be the jewel in Hilton's musical crown and one of the highlights of any given week on the KZN Midlands musical calendar. The party is at The Knoll on Wednesday evening, March 23, from 7pm.
With bands traveling from as far afield as Cape Town and Johannesburg to play for our enthusiastic, appreciative audience - there's simply nothing quite like MiTH. And we have some amazing acts lined up to celebrate our birthday.
The unique combination of rustic cattle shed, heart-stirring music, an audience truly devoted to the heart and soul of music, tasty (inexpensive) food served in a very slightly smokey old barn, evocative lighting, and the hearts and souls left on the MiTH stage by musicians who just love to play there - these things make for a simply unforgettable and somewhat addictive musical experience. MiTH people become family.

This Cape Town based band started out in June 2008, premiering onstage at the V&A Waterfront shortly following their establishment. It wasn’t long before Cherry Vynil was playing consistently at many other area hotspots, like Long Street’s Zula Bar and Jackson Hall at Grand West Casino. The band is honoured to say they have shared the stage with South Africa’s beloved Freshly Ground at the V&A Waterfront in December 2008 as well as prime circle Aardklop 2010.
The band also takes pride in the opportunity they received to perform at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK) 2009 alongside many respected South African musicians. Later that year they found themselves at The Forbidden Fruit Festival and Aardklop 2009 and 2010.

MiTH is a semi-open mic music club. An opportunity for musicians to share the joy of their music with a friendly audience which includes fellow musicians – who have all “been there” too. (Non-musicians welcome too!) Grace College Past Pupil, Richard Taylor, has just been awarded the degree of Master of Science in Fisheries Science, with distinction, at Rhodes University. Richard was able to put his passion for agriculture and the environment to good use for his research project. He investigated the use of treated brewery effluent as a water and nutrient source in crop irrigation. Richard’s external examiner from the USA said his work has great implications for agriculture and environmental restoration in arid and semi-arid environments throughout the world. He is now starting his PhD in the same field. Grace College is proud of Richard’s achievements and wishes him all the very best for his PhD.

Artisan’s Pizza and Pasta continue to support our club for which we are extremely grateful. The competition last week was won by Brian and Pam Ravno playing with Bernice Shaw. The second team with Hugh Barr, Bob Mitchell and Charles Carr won vouchers from Ninos. Lucky draw prizes also from Ninos awarded per position in the team were as follows: Skip – Gert Snyman. Second – Geoff Shaw. Lead – Neil Tainton. Many thanks to Ninos and Artisan’s and to the enthusiastic bowlers who make these events such fun.
Andrew Giles aka Chef Andrew was a perfect host for our networking evening at La Rose, we indulged in delicious snacks including crayfish blinis. The savouries were beautifully finished with mini chocolate brownies and meringues, green for St Patrick’s Day. The heavens exploded as networkers were about to leave so our gallant host, Andrew, hauled out mugs so we could enjoy something warm to drink while we waited for the welcome downpour to abate.
Grade 7 pupils set up a variety of games and stalls for the whole of Laddsworth Primary School to enjoy on Friday 11 March. Activities included rope walking, tag shooting, a jumping castle, pony rides plus numerous other games of luck and skill. The fried potato twirls on a stick and slushies were a huge hit.

These books are aimed at children between about 4 years and 8 years of age and combine fun with learning activities. Konki and Lonki are an African brother and sister, and they have fun with their animal friends in all sorts of activities. Each book has an initial full colour educational section followed by a self-teaching colouring-in part. The first book, Konki and Lonki at Home (2009) has now almost sold out (1000 copies) locally, but is still available via amazon.com (search either the title or under author pseudonym Marianne Dufornet). In August 2015, Konki and Lonki at Home was launched round the world at all the major bookfairs by Marianne’s publishers, SBPRA (Houston, Texas), including venues at Beijing, New York, London, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Paris, Dubai and in Mexico, Brazil, India and many other major centres. Since arriving in Hilton a couple of years ago, Marianne has completed two further titles in the series. Book number 2, Konki and Lonki at the Hairdresser (2015) has sold well locally by direct sales, and is also on sale at various bookshops locally (including the Lazy Lizard in Howick, White Cottage Books at the Junction in Nottingham Road, the Toy Hut at the Quarry Centre in Hilton, and Bookworld at the Cascades Centre) where it sells for R120-00; it can be bought directly from Marianne for only R90-00 (071-178 6760). This month, Marianne’s latest book in the series, Konki and Lonki in the City (2016) has just become available (R90-00 by direct sale) and is a bumper book at 60 pages of fun. All three books are on view at Hillberry Art Gallery (open every Saturday 10h00-16h00, otherwise by appointment).
The 2016/2017 rate will once more be made up of the Nersa pre-approved 8% increase as well as a 1.4% additional increase tariff.

Our handsome Hilton College young men enjoyed an amazing Matric Dance with their beautiful partners. It was a magical evening and the hall looked stunning. The theme for the evening was "The New York Empire State of Mind" and each table had a different theme. Well done to Mrs van Zuydam, Tom Fraser, the Dance Committee and all the waiters for organizing an unforgettable evening.
Four Laddsworth Primary School cricketers have been selected to represent Midlands Cricket. For the U13 age group Ayakha Mthaane, Joseph Hobden, Carrick McKean and Scott Harvey have been chosen. Luke van Niekerk joins the U12 squad.
